The Wurundjeri Aboriginal clan, one of four Koorie clans that inhabited the Port Phillip region, were the original occupants of the area now known as East Burwood. In the mid 19th century, East Burwood and the surrounding areas were used for cultivation and local horticulturists were supplying Melbourne’s markets, including the Queen Victoria Markets, with cut flowers and fresh produce.
Burwood East is well known for the first Kmart department store in Australia, also known as the Kmart plaza store which was opened in 1969 on the corner of Burwood Road and Blackburn Road. It was the first 24 hour Kmart store and still popular amongst the locals of the area.
