As far as side effects go, a dental implant is made of titanium, so if you have a titanium allergy of some sort you, unfortunately, will not be a candidate for an implant. We don’t have any side effects as such, but you can have what we call post-operative complications.
A complication could mean that the implant fails when doing what we call a torque test. Sometimes the surgery has to happen again. You might not have enough bone so a more major surgery needs to be done. Sometimes after the crown has been put on, the crown breaks because you are a heavy bruxer. So there’s a lot of risks that can be involved with an implant.
That is why it is very important that your risk is managed and the only way we can give you a proper answer for your particular case is to see you, do some x-rays, and then tell you what risks may be there for you, saying that 90% of the time we have very successful results, but remember the 10%-15% that don’t go our way.
